5TPD Palm Kernel Oil Refinery Project in Nigeria

Date: August 7, 2026

This 5TPD palm kernel oil refinery project in Nigeria began when an established edible oil processor sought to move up the value chain — from selling crude oils to producing refined edible oil products. The project was designed primarily for crude palm kernel oil, with the flexibility to also process crude soybean oil when required.

Project Background: Upgrading from Crude Oil Processing to Refined Palm Kernel Oil

An established edible oil processor in Nigeria sought to expand his business by moving up the value chain — transitioning from selling crude oils to producing higher-value refined edible oil products.

The customer's primary requirement was a reliable refining system for crude palm kernel oil at a relatively small production scale. Since the customer also handled crude soybean oil, the refinery needed sufficient flexibility to accommodate both feedstocks without requiring separate refining systems.

Through initial consultations in January 2025, Henan Glory's engineering team demonstrated proof of expertise with case studies of similar capacity projects and highlighted its established local branch and warehouse in Ogun State, Nigeria. The customer also considered the availability of local technical support in Nigeria when evaluating the project. After the technical scheme was confirmed, the contract was officially signed on March 24, 2025.

Technical Solution: 5TPD Batch Palm Kernel Oil Refinery with Thermal Oil Heating

To address the customer's palm kernel oil refining requirements and need for additional feedstock flexibility, Henan Glory designed a customized 5TPD batch-type edible oil refinery featuring a thermal oil heating system.

Flexible Batch Operation: The refinery was primarily designed for crude palm kernel oil, while the batch refining system also allows crude soybean oil to be processed when required. Refining conditions can be adjusted from one batch to another according to the characteristics of each crude oil.

Thermal Oil Heating: The thermal oil heating system provides stable and uniform heat transfer, supporting consistent temperature control throughout the refining process.

Compact Configuration: The batch configuration significantly reduces initial footprint and energy consumption, offering an optimal ROI for small-to-medium oil refining enterprises.

Turnkey Execution: On-Site Installation, Commissioning & Training

Following equipment delivery in July 2025, Henan Glory dispatched installation engineers to the client's facility in Nigeria on March 19, 2026, after the client completed the required civil works and utility preparation.

The on-site work included:

Equipment Installation & Integration: Engineers worked with the local team on equipment positioning, high-vacuum system alignment, thermal oil pipeline connections, and auxiliary utility integration.

Process Fine-Tuning & Trial Runs: Trial production was conducted using both crude palm kernel oil and soybean oil. Process parameters were adjusted according to the characteristics of each feedstock, including degumming and deacidification conditions, bleaching earth dosage, and deodorization vacuum levels. During trial production, bleaching earth dosage was set at 2.5% for soybean oil and 3–4% for palm kernel oil, with adjustments made according to the color result of each batch after bleaching.

Local Operator Training: Henan Glory engineers provided hands-on training for local operators covering daily equipment operation, safety procedures, preventive maintenance, and basic quality control.

Project Result

On July 31, 2026, the 5TPD refinery was successfully commissioned and officially put into commercial operation.

The plant now consistently produces approximately 150 tons of refined edible oil per month (based on 5 TPD × ~30 operating days), delivering both refined palm kernel oil and refined soybean oil that meet local market standards. This allows the client to capture significantly higher profit margins by shifting from low-margin crude oil trading to premium refined oil sales.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What capacity can a batch palm kernel oil refinery handle?

A: Henan Glory's batch refining solutions typically cover 1–20 TPD. This Nigeria project uses a 5 TPD configuration, with a theoretical processing capacity of approximately 150 tons per month based on 30 operating days.

Q: Can a palm kernel oil refinery also process soybean oil?

A: Yes. A batch refining system allows complete control over each cycle, enabling seamless switching between feedstocks with tailored operating parameters. Crude palm kernel oil requires precise temperature control during deodorization, while soybean oil demands rigorous degumming to remove complex phospholipids.

Q: Why is thermal oil heating used in a palm kernel oil refinery?

A: Compared to basic electric heating, thermal oil heating ensures rapid, uniform, and continuous heat transfer — critical for stable deacidification and high-vacuum deodorization. It is better suited for consistent commercial production at 5 TPD and above.

Q: How long does it take to complete a 5TPD palm kernel oil refinery project?

A: For this project, the contract was signed on March 24, 2025, equipment was delivered on July 12, 2025, installation started on March 19, 2026, and commercial commissioning was completed on July 31, 2026. The overall project timeline was approximately 16 months, including the customer's site preparation period.

Q: What training and after-sales support are provided for palm kernel oil refinery projects?

A: Henan Glory engineers provide hands-on operator training covering daily equipment operation, safety procedures, preventive maintenance, and basic quality control. After commissioning, the Nigeria branch continues to provide technical assistance and after-sales support during the refinery's operation.
