Physical refining is the preferred refining technology for large-scale crude palm oil (CPO) processing. Unlike traditional chemical refining, it removes free fatty acids (FFA) and odors simultaneously in the deodorizing tower under high temperature and high vacuum through steam distillation — no alkali neutralization, soapstock separation or water washing needed. This results in higher oil yield, lower chemical and water consumption, less wastewater, and a valuable by-product of high-quality palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD).
